Munich Geisel Privathotels

Family-owned Since 1900

An Overview

1900 – 1929

The history of Geisel Privathotels began at the turn of the last century with the operation of the Löwenbräu tent at the Munich Oktoberfest. With the opening of the “Pasinger Weinbauer” during World War I, Anna and Karl Geisel demonstrated economic foresight. The topic of wine was certainly a bold business concept at that time, especially in beer-dominated Munich.

1930 – 1990

Following the successful concept of the “Pasinger Weinbauer,” three more venues opened by the mid-1930s, culminating in the couple inaugurating their first hotel, the “Hotel Rheinhof,” at Munich's main train station in 1935. They set new standards once again, making the Rheinhof one of the most modern hotels in Munich at the time, complete with its own laundry, butcher shop, and even in-house ice cream production.

The following year, Anna and Karl Geisel acquired the Hotel Excelsior, which quickly became Munich's number one, and not two years later, they added their third hotel, the Hotel Königshof, to their small, exclusive collection.

The Hotel Rheinhof was completely destroyed during World War II, leading to the decision not to rebuild it. The Hotel Königshof was also heavily damaged but was reconstructed in the years following the war.

1991 – 2000

The topic of wine, which has been a defining element of the Geisel family's history from the beginning, received its own venue with the opening of the Vinothek in 1991. The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Schwabing was opened in 1995. A further emphasis on wine was established with the opening of the wine shop Geisel's Wine Gallery in 2000, which is now regarded as an exclusive supplier to Munich's gastronomy scene.

2001 – Today

In 2017, not only was the Excelsior nearly completely renovated, but the Vinothek was also expanded. Additionally, the luxury city residence BEYOND was opened directly at Munich's Marienplatz.

In 2018, the Cosmopolitan Hotel was reopened under the name Schwabinger Wahrheit after a three-year renovation. The Hotel Königshof was temporarily closed at the end of 2018 to undergo complete reconstruction, which is planned to take 2.5 years.

In 2021, the Hotel Königshof was sold.
